Earlier this week while scrolling through Pinterest I saw a quote that said, “Be you. Do you. For you.” So pinteresty right? I read that and automatically got a tiny knot in my stomach, something about it just wasn’t sitting right with me. It got me thinking…okay..yes, it’s important to be ourselves for many reasons but something seems off, like it’s missing the mark just a little. Here are my thoughts: it’s less about “being you, for you” and more about “being you, for me.” I don’t mean me, Alex McDermott, personally. What I’m saying is that it’s so important to be ourselves, for other people.
Why? I’ll start with this…have you ever thought about the impact and influence your life has on others? More importantly, have you ever thought about how it might affect those people if you aren’t living authentically?
Before we really jump into this I want to take a quick second to touch on what I mean (more like don’t mean) by living authentically. We live in this wild time where everyone SO invested in “living out their truth” and “finding their truth”. For real though, how many times have you heard someone say, “I’m just living my truth”..it’s like the catchphrase of this generation. Anyway, this is not what I am talking about here and I want to explain why. Now, I might be the only one with this opinion…who knows, but more often than not when I hear someone using this phrase it is usually in response to something reckless, something selfish, something that doesn’t even question or think about how it may affect the people around them. I’m not saying that this is the case for everyone, I’m sure there are people out there who are “living their truth” in a beautiful and productive way. Still..this has been my experience & I would honestly be SHOCKED if I was the only person on this planet that felt this way.
Back to business..let’s chat about why it is so important to rest in who you are as a beautiful & completely unique individual. Did you know that you are beautiful? Has anyone told you yet today? If not, I’M TELLING YOU RIGHT NOW BB. You are so beautiful. There is no one else on this planet that is even remotely like you. Out of all 7.6 BILLION people, there is only ONE of you & that my friend is pretty special. Did you know that you were created with design & purpose? Well, you were. Embrace it, there is power in knowing & believing that. So why are we trying to be something we are not called to be? Can being authentic really make that much of a difference in the life of someone else? YES! Whether you know it or not, people are always watching you. Kinda creepy right? But I’m serious..think about it! At work, in line at your coffee shop, on the subway, at your dinner table, in the laundromat, ON SOCIAL MEDIA..you get the picture. What I am trying to say is that people observe the way you live, the things you say, how you respond to situations, and are influenced by it. (If you don’t believe me look at all the people wearing bike shorts who aren’t riding a bike right now..you may even be wearing a pair as we speak & not to mention the whole #InMyFeelingsChallenge.) Now, if they are positively or negatively influenced is up to you, your choices, your words, your actions. Are they ones that are going to lift people up or tear them down? Before you answer, can I let you in on a secret…you have no competition, you know that right? You are the only YOU that there is, so you have no one to compete with! So why tear others down when you have no competition?
You, beautiful one, are destined for greatness. You have to remember, we just talked about how it’s not a competition..so how are you going to achieve greatness? By lifting others up. By making people a priority in your life. By serving others. How do you serve others? By being YOU. By helping out & on loving people. By sharing your story.
I need you to be YOU, for ME. Because YOU are BEAUTIFUL, you are IMPORTANT, you MATTER to me, to the the people around you, and to the God that created you in the first place! You are changing the lives around you whether you like it or not.
You are making a difference by simply just being who you are. The whole world was changed the day you were born.
